We are delighted to hear the news of the appointment of Professor Sir Oliver Hart as a Visiting Professor in LSE Department of Finance and the Global School of Sustainability (GSoS).
Professor Hart, co-recipient of the 2016 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, is currently the Lewis P. and Linda L. Geyser University Professor at Harvard University, where he has taught since 1993.
Professor Hart’s research centres on the roles that ownership structure and contractual arrangements play in the governance and boundaries of corporations. His recent work focuses on how parties can write better contracts, and on the social responsibility of business.
Financial Markets Group set up the Sir Oliver Hart Lecture Series and the associated Conference Series in 2023. The themes of these events aim to have policy relevance and connections to Professor Sir Oliver Hart’s pioneering research. The series has focused on themes on sustainable corporate governance, i.e., on studying the role of companies in the economy and society, whether companies should focus solely on profits or attempt to reflect the non-financial preferences of their shareholders, and how such preferences can be reflected in corporate governance.
This year’s theme is sustainable investing. The 3rd Sir Oliver Hart Lecture, titled “The Carbon Problem”, will be delivered by Lubos Pastor (University of Chicago Booth School of Business) on 4 December. The Conference on Sustainable Investing will follow on 5 December.
