Applications are invited for two part-time Research Assistants to assist Dr Simeon Djankov, Co-Director for Policy in Financial Markets Group, in his research project “Women’s Empowerment, Economic Freedom, and the Role of Law in Driving Prosperity” funded by the John Templeton Foundation.
The positions involve using statistical packages like Stata or Python or R to document trends in data on gendered laws and regulation over 190 countries for the period 1970-2021, as well as correlating these trends to changes in outcome variables like labour force participation or informality. A summary of the database is here. More broadly, the project investigates the institutional and legal changes that have taken place in sample countries over the period of study, and how these changes affect economic and social outcomes.
As well as having demonstrated skills in the use of statistical packages, you should be working towards a Masters or a PhD in economics, finance, or in a mathematical discipline which permits you to bring these tools to econometric work in public economics.
Experience in presenting statistical findings to other scholars is essential. In this project we will be working with professors and students at Harvard University too, and the job requires frequent interactions on explaining the results to a wider group of economists.
You will have the ability to develop and execute a coherent plan of research, under the supervision of faculty. You should also have excellent written and oral communication skills.
The positions are offered until May 2024 with the possibility of being extended. The expected start date is around August 2023. The number of hours per week is 20. You must already have the Right to Work in the UK.
Salary at the current rate is £21.41 per hour (including holiday pay accrued per hour worked).
