This event features a fireside chat between Sebastian Mallaby and Juanita González-Uribe on a variety of topics in entrepreneurial finance such as: the origins of the venture capital industry in the US, venture capital as an engine of economic growth, its limitations and new frontiers, the changing power dynamic between entrepreneurs and investors, and London as a top city of venture capital investment.

This lecture series focuses on the role of finance in the entrepreneurial journey. The aim is to improve our understanding of the role of early-stage financiers in the start-up and scale-up of new ventures. Discussions will touch upon several research topics like the types of constraints that limit the start and growth of new companies, and the role of specialized financiers, as well as policy, in mitigating them.

Sebastian Mallaby (@scmallaby) is the Paul A Volcker Senior Fellow in International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations. An experienced journalist and public speaker, Mallaby contributes to a variety of publications, including Foreign Affairs, the Atlantic, the Washington Post, and the Financial Times, where he spent two years as a contributing editor. He is the author of five books, most recently The Power Law: Venture Capital and the Making of the New Future.

Juanita González-Uribe is Associate Professor in Finance at the London School of Economics. Her research focuses on entrepreneurship, private equity and innovation. Her work spans different regions including Latin America, the UK, and the USA.
