Seminar title: The New European Commission’s Financial Regulatory Agenda
Abstract: The new European Commission headed by Jean-Claude Juncker takes over in a context of unprecedented European financial regulatory activity, driven by the reaction to the crisis, Banking Union, and the G20 global agenda. To this heavy plate Juncker has added the ambition of building a “capital markets union,” the policy content of which remains largely to be defined, in a context of uncertainty about the relationship between the UK and the EU. Nicolas Véron, a recognized expert on European and global financial regulation, will present and discuss the legacy from the previous Commission, the constraints on new policy initiatives, and options for reform over the coming five-year term.
Nicolas Véron is a scholar both at Bruegel, which he cofounded in 2002-04, and at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, which he joined in 2009. His research is primarily about the economics and political economy of financial systems and financial services policy. A graduate of France’s Ecole Polytechnique, his earlier experience was in the French government and the private sector. He is an independent board member of the global derivatives trade repository arm of DTCC, a financial infrastructure company that operates on a non-profit basis. He has been a witness at parliamentary hearings in the US Senate, European Parliament, and in several European member states; a financial policy expert for the European Commission and Court of Auditors; and a consultant to the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. In September 2012, Bloomberg Markets included Véron in its annual 50 Most Influential list, with reference to his early advocacy of European banking union.
